[Q] trying to manually update to lollipop but crashes when waiting for bootloader topic

hello guys, i am having some problem manually updating my htc one to lollipop
my phone is locked , S-ON
while running the RUU it detect the device at first then after starting looking for bootloader it give me an error usb not connected , and i repeat it several times .
my question is do i have to be unlocked and s-off to update through RUU ?
