google calendar help topic

I want to know the functionality of the google calendar. it auto sync's contact bday info, but does not notify me of their bday . is this how it is ??
But there was one day when google now cards notified me of a bday of a contact in Google+ .
how does this thing work ?
I have a nexus 5 with lolipop
